3 Common Mistakes To Avoid When Decluttering Your Home

Most of us feel like decluttering our homes at the start of a new year, especially after the holiday season has passed, but decluttering a home is not a simple task. It requires a lot of time, willpower, patience, and detachment. And sometimes people make common mistakes that derail their best efforts to conquer clutter.

Decluttering your home every once or twice a year is a good habit, especially before a top-to-bottom house cleaning, but there are a few good practices you need to follow to achieve the desired results.

Here are three of the most common mistakes to avoid when decluttering your home.

1. Buying unnecessary things

The whole idea of decluttering your home is to get rid of things you don’t need anymore, so avoid going to the store to buy things to “organize” your home when you don’t need them. Instead, start by throwing away the things you don’t need so you have a good idea of the items you will keep and what containers you will need to get to keep them organized. Containers are very helpful if they are set up properly in your home or garage.

2. Rushing up

Decluttering any house is a full-time job, so do not rush. Even if you think you can finish in one day, take the time to go over each room in detail and make sure you’re not leaving anything behind.

If you limit yourself to an entire day of organizing you will end up burned up by the end of the day and with a semi-organized home. Take your time instead and spend three hours in each space or until it is completely organized and then move on to another room.

3. Leaving things for “later”

Every time you finish decluttering one room, make sure to remove things immediately that do not belong in that room. For example, take things you want to throw away to the trash bin. If you want to donate some items, take them to the place where you want to leave them, or if you want to give them to one of your friends, take the items to his/her home. The idea is to avoid leaving things around in boxes or bags to get rid of them “later”. Remember, you’re not done with decluttering your home until you’re completely done. The sign of success will be some space.

These are some of the most common mistakes you need to avoid when you start to declutter your home. Remember to always keep in mind that a declutter doesn’t mean your house will look clean. To complete the process it is always a good idea to have professional maids clean your house. At Weekend Maids, we’re always happy to set you up with professional house cleaning services.
