The “Spiritual” Side of a Clean House + House Cleaning Coupons

Whether you are a spiritual person or not, we are pretty sure you would not argue against the merits of how a clean and organized home contributes to happiness and peace of mind. We are continuing our series on things one can do to keep happiness in the home and keep the mind calm. There has been a lot of talk about Feng Shui – a Chinese philosophy on harmonizing one with the environment, and Vastu Shastra – an Indian science of architecture and construction. Both of these schools of thought have some interesting tidbits to offer when it comes to organizing your surroundings for a happier you:

  • Clutter is evil – Pretty much anyone will tell you that clutter slows things down. Feng Shui would argue that clutter in the kitchen, where you cook food every day, blocks the energy flow to/from this area, especially where food is stored. As one website states, “the state of your kitchen is the state of your health, so do yourself a favor and thoroughly clean your kitchen!” Each time you look through your kitchen to find something and encounter clutter or “kitchen junk”; you are reminded of the fact that things should be better organized. Instead of putting it off every time, schedule a day to get it done – or schedule a day to PAY someone to get it done for you!
  • Pots & pans DO make a difference – We have read quite a bit as of late on the merits of quality cookware. Many experts suggest that non-stick cooking surfaces like Teflon leech into the food and can impact your health in a negative way. Feng Shui would argue that copper cookware attracts positive energy. Cookware that is used every day to prepare food you put in your body should be high quality and oftentimes it is worth the extra money. Consider adding multi-clad cookware to your kitchen repertoire – something with true 18/10 stainless steel and/or copper.
  • Plants are awesome – Both Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra encourage the use of plants in the home. Plants symbolize freshness, new beginnings, and vitality (herbs are, after all, good for you).
  • Directions matter – Vastu Shastra has a lot to stay about directions – specifically which direction the front door faces, the direction of your head and body when sleeping, the location of the kitchen relative to the rest of the house, and so forth. Sleeping is a crucial part of our daily rhythm, and while the notion of direction (East, West, North, and South) may sound hokey, I highly encourage everyone to at least try changing the orientation of the bed a few times. Try different directions and see if you actually get a better night’s sleep. Vastu suggests that one should place their head towards South, East, or West directions but never North. Apparently, placing the head in the North direction will result in ill health, bad dreams, and improper sleep. Believe it or not I recently oriented my own bed without having known about this concept – the previous position put our head in the Northeast direction and sleep quality was here and there – I didn’t have anything with which to compare. In the new orientation our heads are towards Southwest – and it so happens that I have been sleeping so much better. In fact, sometimes it’s a little too good as getting up in the morning has been tough! All said and done, whether it’s just in my mind or not – it is worth exploring a new direction for the bed!
