Stain-Removal Tips For House Cleaning

Encountering stains is a normal part of a house cleaning. Stains can be difficult to remove and when you are expecting guests at any moment, having the right stain remover can make all the difference. Here are some cool approaches to removing different types of stains along with an awesome coupon for Fall savings.

Chewing Gum Stain Removal – the key aspect of removing chewing gum from clothes or carpet is to make the gum brittle. By doing so the “stickiness” factor goes down and the gum can release its hold on the cloth or carpet. Use ice – place it directly on the gum until it is brittle. If you have a delicate fabric you might consider putting it entirely in the freezer. Once it is brittle, peel the gum off with your fingers or with a brush. If there is any residue left over after the gum is removed you can use a mixture of water and vinegar to remove the stain.

Soy Sauce Stain Removal – we all know that soy sauce can be notorious for stains. To remove them from clothing the key ingredient is water. Run the cloth under water to dissolve as much of the stain as possible, then rub in laundry detergent with your hand or brush. Let the detergent do its thing by keeping the cloth exposed to the detergent for a couple of minutes and then rinse. Repeat the process if necessary. If you think the cloth can handle it, try using a bleaching agent like vinegar or hydrogen peroxide in between using the detergent. You may also need to soak the cloth in warm water for a while before trying the process all over again.

Lipstick Stain Removal – there are few ways to tackle lipstick stains. One site suggests saturating the stain with hairspray (assuming the cloth is machine-washable). Then remove the stain with a sponge or a damp cloth. Launder the cloth afterwards to remove any residue. Another site reviewed a bunch of different options, including hairspray, and the winner was plain dish soap! Treat the cloth with dish soap and let it sit for 20-30 minutes and then launder as usual.

Wine Stain Removal – there is nothing worse than assessing the home after a “rager” and discovering that someone carelessly dropped wine on your nice carpet (or perhaps you spilled it on yourself after the 5th glass 🙂 ). There are countless ways people have addressed the removal of wine stains – from using club soda, to milk, to cat litter, to white wine, to even vodka. This site provides a wonderful overview of such methods.
